Albuquerque has hot summers, cold winters with frequent freezes, and a dry climate, and the City sets curb cut width limits and requires permits for driveway work in the right-of-way. This guide covers published local price ranges, Albuquerque's curb cut rules and permit fees, and how to time paving around the local weather. The contractor list above shows paving pros who serve Albuquerque on Main Street.
We only list numbers from published sources that give a Albuquerque figure. All figures in this table come from HomeBlue's Albuquerque cost guides, published in 2022, so expect current quotes to differ. Treat them as a starting point, not a quote.
| Job | Published Albuquerque figure (HomeBlue, 2022) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| New asphalt driveway (3 to 4 inches, removing old asphalt) | $4 to $6 per sq ft. A 24 x 40 ft two-car driveway: $3,400 to $6,000 | HomeBlue, Asphalt Driveway Cost in Albuquerque (2022) |
| Resurfacing with a 2-inch overlay | About $2 to $4 less per sq ft than full replacement ($2 to $3 per sq ft for a 2-inch overlay) | HomeBlue, Asphalt Driveway Cost in Albuquerque (2022) |
| Driveway sealcoating | $0.30 to $0.50 per sq ft. A 24 x 30 ft two-car driveway: $210 to $350 | HomeBlue, Driveway Sealing Cost in Albuquerque (2022) |
Albuquerque bids often change with base preparation, the condition of an older driveway, and whether the driveway approach at the street is part of the job. HomeBlue's sealing guide also notes that some contractors charge a $75 to $100 mobilization fee on small driveways. We did not find a sourced local figure for pothole patching alone, so ask for repair as its own line item.
Paving that stays entirely on your own lot does not touch the public right-of-way, but driveway, sidewalk, and curb work at the street does.
Curb cut rules. Albuquerque's curb cut ordinance (section 6-5-4-3) says residential curb cuts must be 12 to 22 feet wide measured from the gutter line, at least 22 feet of standing curb must remain between two curb cuts on the same lot, curb cuts must be at least 2.5 feet from side property lines, and circle drives need at least 60 feet of street frontage.
Permits and fees. The City's Barricade Fees page lists an excavation permit at $42, plus $12 per curb cut and $6 per drive pad. The permit application says new curb cuts need a site plan approved by the Planning Department, Transportation Development Section, at (505) 924-3991, and contractors excavating in the right-of-way must post a $10,000 excavation bond under the City's permit procedures.
NOAA's 1991 to 2020 climate normals for Albuquerque International Airport show about 8.8 inches of rain a year. July is the wettest month at about 1.64 inches, and January is the driest at about 0.36 inches. About 4.7 inches falls from June through September.
July highs average about 91 degrees, and the station averages about 64 days a year at 90 degrees or hotter. Winters bring about 93 nights a year at freezing or colder and about 7.9 inches of snow, and January highs average about 48 degrees.
Our tip for Albuquerque homeowners: late spring through early fall is the best window for paving and sealcoating. Fresh asphalt and sealcoat need warm, dry days, so plan around the long freeze season. Summer work should start early in the morning.
