Fontana's inland climate means long, hot summers, a short winter rainy season, and a dedicated Driveway Approach Construction Permit for any curb, sidewalk, or pavement work tied to a driveway in the public right-of-way. This guide covers published local price ranges, Fontana's driveway approach permit, and how to time paving around summer heat. The contractor list above shows paving pros who serve Fontana on Main Street.
We only list numbers from published sources that give a Fontana figure. All figures in this table come from HomeBlue's Fontana cost guides, published in 2022, so expect current quotes to differ. Treat them as a starting point, not a quote.
| Job | Published Fontana figure (HomeBlue, 2022) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| New asphalt driveway (3 to 4 inches, removing old asphalt) | $4 to $8 per sq ft. A 24 x 40 ft two-car driveway: $4,300 to $7,500 | HomeBlue, Asphalt Driveway Cost in Fontana (2022) |
| Resurfacing with a 2-inch overlay | About $2 to $4 less per sq ft than full replacement ($2 to $4 per sq ft for a 2-inch overlay) | HomeBlue, Asphalt Driveway Cost in Fontana (2022) |
| Driveway sealcoating | $0.30 to $0.50 per sq ft. A 24 x 30 ft two-car driveway: $220 to $360 | HomeBlue, Driveway Sealing Cost in Fontana (2022) |
Inland Empire bids often change with heat-related scheduling, base repair on older driveways, and whether the driveway approach must be rebuilt under permit. HomeBlue's sealing guide also notes that some contractors charge a $75 to $100 mobilization fee on small driveways. We did not find a sourced local figure for pothole patching alone, so ask for repair as its own line item.
Paving that stays entirely on your own lot does not touch the public right-of-way, but the driveway approach between the street and your property does.
Driveway Approach Construction Permit. The City of Fontana's Handbook on Driveway Approach Construction Permits says a property owner must first obtain this permit to remove, alter, or construct a curb and gutter, sidewalk, pavement, or other improvement associated with a driveway approach in the public right-of-way. The work must follow the City's Standards Design Guidelines, Standard Plan No. 1001. Required submittals are the permit application and an exhibit of the driveway approach.
Fees and inspection. The handbook (revised February 2024) lists a $286 plan review fee, a $45 permit issuance fee, and a $176 minimum inspection fee, plus a 5 percent technology fee on plan check fees. After the permit is issued, the permittee must notify the Inspection Section at least 2 days before starting, and the work may require a pre-construction meeting with Public Works inspectors. The permit stays active for one year.
Fontana does not have its own NOAA normals station, so we use nearby Ontario International Airport. Its 1991 to 2020 normals show about 11.6 inches of rain a year, with roughly 10.0 inches falling from November through March. June through September averages only about 0.2 inches combined.
July highs average about 94 degrees and August about 95 at Ontario, and the station averages about 93 days a year at 90 degrees or hotter. Freezing nights average about 2 a year.
Our tip for Fontana homeowners: pave in spring or fall, when the ground is dry but the days are cooler. In summer ask your crew to start early and keep cars off fresh asphalt until it sets, and avoid sealcoating right before a winter storm.
